The Department of Gastroenterology was established in the 1960s. We have around 30 gastroenterologists offering a spectrum of services. The Endoscopy Center is equipped with the latest instruments facilitating the performance of gastroscopy, colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy, ESD, EUS and ERCP. It offers endoscopy services for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, including enteral stents, biliary stents, banding of esophageal varices, endoscopic treatment for gastrointestinal bleeding and endoscopic ultrasound. The endoscopy centre performs over 20,000 procedures every year, leading Zhejiang Province.


The Department plays a primary role in diagnosing and treating digestive system diseases. The team has extensive clinical experience in handling disorders of pancreas, liver, gallbladder, esophagus, stomach, small intestine and colon. Particularly notable is our expertise in the treatment of reflux esophagitis, H. pylori infection, chronic gastritis, peptic ulcer, carcinoma of stomach, liver cirrhosis, common bile duct calculi, acute pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, and functional gastrointestinal disorders. We have established clinical standards for the diagnosis and treatment of these diseases as a result of our extensive experience accumulated over many years’ practice. Advanced procedures are performed by expert endoscopists in patient-friendly facilities equipped with the most advanced medical technology. Some specialized procedures, including biliary or esophageal stenting, retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), endoscopic sphicterotmy (EST), ultrasonic endoscope (EUS), endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR), polypectomy through endoscopy, esophageal varice loop ligation, endoscopic resection of pre-malignant and early colon and gastrointestinal tumors, are also offered by this department. The team is particularly experienced in handling difficult and rare cases, such as Wermer syndrome and POEMS syndrome.
