SAHZU Cardiologist Dr.Wang Jian’an and his Team Successfully Performed the First Transapical Aortic Valve Replacement in Zhejiang Province

Dr.Wang Jian’an and his Team successfully performed the first transapical aortic valve replacement in Zhejiang Province on September 8th, filling the gap of Zhejiang Province in this field. This is a new breakthrough of Dr. Wang’s team, following their pioneering application of transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR ) via femoral artery for aortic stenosis on March, 11, 2013, and their first attempt in the country to treat aortic insufficiency with TAVR via the femoral artery on September 18, 2014.

TAVR, the minimally invasive surgical procedure, repairs the valve without removing the old, damaged valve. Instead, it wedges a replacement valve into the aortic valve’s place. It has the advantages of small wound, fast recovery and low risk, which provides beneficial treatment options to people who are considered high risk patients for standard valve replacement surgery. So far, the team has completed nearly 200 TAVR cases with transfemoral approach for patients from 17 provinces, municipalities and autonomous regions and gained a wealth of experience in complex transcatheter aortic valve replacement, such as two lobe abnormalities, aortic regurgitation, porcelain aorta, etc. The successful application of transapical approach will allow our cardiologists to choose the best and safest way to access the valve for the patients.
