Dr. Wang Jian’an Successfully Saved a Patient by TAVR in India

On February 10 2017, Dr. Wang Jian’an was invited to Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) located in Coimbatore area of India, and successfully performed a Transcather Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) on a severe patient. Dr. Wang demonstrated the surgery with very details and also used the chance as operation teaching.

KMCH was honored as one of the Best Private Hospital in India by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry in 2016. The hospital has pioneered several techniques like the Da Vinci Robot operation, heart, liver and kidney transplantation and so on. The department of Cardiology initiated the St Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) project. More than 1000 cases of cardiac surgeries are performed every year and a great number of heart bypass surgeries are operated with heart beating under non-extracorporal circulation machine.

With the history of coronary heart disease with hypertension, this 75 years old man had frequent severe chest tightness, and has been diagnosed as severe aortic stenosis. Since he did the cardiac bypass surgery in 2012, it is highly risky to do another one. However, the patient could be dead anytime if there is no appropriate treatment. KMCH has never used the TAVR technique before, so they invited Dr. Wang Jian’an and his team from SAHZU to help the patient.

This patient is diagnosed as two lobe heart aortic valve malformation with asymmetric calcification, meaning unusual superior difficulty in anatomy. Professor Wang and his group employed an innovative technology created by themselves to achieve the personalized therapy for patient through TAVR. The position of valve after operation was excellent nearly without transvalvular gradient and was accompanied by less valvular regurgitation. As so far, the patient recovered very well.
