The 22nd Congress of Chinese Ophthalmological Society was held at Fuzhou from September 13th to 17th.  Prof. Yao Ke, the Chair of Ophthalmology Department at SAHZU and the Chair of Chinese Ophthalmological Society，served  as the Chairman of the Congress. The theme of the conference is to explore innovative ways to build a bright future.

It was the first national ophthalmological conference since Prof. Yao Ke took over the society last year, and also one of the largest annual ophthalmological meeting in the world.  More than 10,000 ophthalmologists national wide attended the conference. Over 700 Chinese and international ophthalmological experts presented eight plenary lectures, about 500 keynote speeches and three live surgeries broadcasting. It creatively hosted international academic sessions, such as “Sino-US Ophthalmological Society Summit”, “China-India Ophthalmology Summit”, and “Ophthalmology Innovation Forum”.

Prof. Yao Ke, Chairman of the Congress,  Prof. Hugh Taylor, President of International Council of Ophthalmology (ICO), Prof. Dennis Lam, Immediate-Past President of Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology (APAO), Chen Houluan, Deputy Director of Fujian Provincial Health and Family Planning Commission, and Mr.Gu Faming, Secretary of Discipline Committee of the Chinese Medical Association made speeches on the grand opening ceremony. The Congress also hosted award ceremony to honor ophthalmologists who had made outstanding contributions to the ophthalmology development in China.

According to the hospital ranking released by Fudan University Hospital Management Institute in 2017, Ophthalmology at SAHZU is ranked top 8 in all Chinese hospitals. In particular, treatment of cataract at SAHZU is standing at the leading level in the world. In addition to his leadership in the Chinese Ophthalmological Society, Dr.Yao also was elected as the Vice President of Asia Pacific Association of Cataract & Refractive Surgeons in 2015.
