ON APRIL 28 AT SAHZU, 3 LIVES PASSED AWAY BUT ANOTHER 12 LIVES WERE SAVED.

12 organ transplantation surgeries, including 1 heart transplant, 2 lung transplants, 3 liver transplants, 6 kidney transplants, were successfully performed within same day on April 28 at SAHZU. From 8 am to 11 pm, over 100 SAHZU doctors and nurses from HPB Surgery, Cardiovascular Surgery, Urology, Thoracic Surgery, Intensive Care Unit, Anesthesiology, Ultrasound, Clinical Laboratory, Blood Bank etc., fought together for a total of 15 hours in this remarkable event.

BOWING TO THE DONOR PATIENT

At 8:30 am, when the first donor patient was escorted into the operating room, the room was filled with solemn silence. Every surgeon and nurse in the room paid their respect with a deep bow to the patient.

At 4:30 pm, after 8 hours, organ procurement of all 12 organs from 3 donor patients was completed. The organ transplantation went on until late night. Another 6 corneas were also procured and well stored at SAHZU Ophthalmology for future use..

The Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary (HPB) Division of General Surgery Department of SAHZU is a national key discipline, rich in history and strong in clinic, teaching and research. The Head of HPB Surgery, Prof. Weilin WANG, is a nationally renowned HPB surgeon specialized in liver transplantation. Dr. WANG’s team is strong in the da Vinci/ laparoscopic resection of hepatobiliary and pancreatic tumors, liver transplantation, pancreatic transplantation.

TRANSPLANTATION TEAMS

The Cardiovascular Surgery Department of SAHZU is a provincial key discipline. Lead by Prof. Aiqiang Dong, the Department has accomplished 42 heart transplants, including one combined heart-kidney transplant and one second heart transplant, leading in the province. One third of the transplantation recipients at the Department are on ECMO while waiting for the donor. The longest waiting time at the Department is 37 days, which set a national record then. The success rate of heart transplant at the Department is 98%, one-year survival rate 90%.

The Urology Department of SAHZU has a kidney transplant team of 8 surgeons all with licenses of organ transplantation. The leading professor of the team, Prof. Jiaquan Xiao, has accomplished over 500 kidney transplants. The one-year survival rate of kidney transplant at the Department is 97%.

The Thoracic Surgery Department of SAHZU is licensed by the National Health Commission of China to conduct lung transplantation surgery. With support from Anesthesiology, Pulmonary Medicine, Intensive Care and other units, the Department is capable of performing both double and single lung transplant for patients in late stage of pulmonary diseases. In 2018, the team successfully performed a double lung transplant for a patient waiting on ECMO for 45 days.
