Prof. FAN Junqiang, Executive Vice Chair of SAHZU Thoracic Surgery and his team has recently demonstrated five complex thoracic procedures at the Republican Specialized Scientific and Practical Medical Center of Surgery Named After Academician V. Vakhidov in Uzbekistan, with the majority utilizing a domestically developed Chinese surgical robot. This marked their third visit to the center at the institution's invitation.

Four of the five procedures were performed using a Chinese-developed robotic-assisted surgical system. The cases included a lung lobectomy for cancer, an ectopic parathyroid tumor resection, and a large mediastinal teratoma removal. One additional surgery for an infected lung cyst was performed using traditional video-assisted thoracoscopy.

During the operations, Prof. FAN controlled the robotic system to perform precise dissection and suturing in the confined spaces of the chest. The system's 3D high-definition view and articulated instruments facilitated complex maneuvers, particularly in the delicate mediastinal area.

Beyond the surgeries, the team engaged with local medical staff on topics including robotic surgery training, patient selection, and cost-effectiveness. A perioperative nurse from the team also provided hands-on guidance to Uzbek nursing staff on positioning the robot and managing instruments during procedures.

The visit represents a continuation of collaboration between SAHZJU and the Vakhidov center, which began with a MoU signed in March 2025. While the first visit focused on introducing minimally invasive surgical techniques, this year's trip highlighted the potential for bridging Chinese medical technology with the world.
