UCLA Health Faculty Members Teach and Learn in Hangzhou

Five of UCLA Health leading faculty members traveled to Hangzhou, China in April to take part in a joint conference with the Department of Anesthesiology at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University (SAHZU), on "The Future of Perioperative Medicine".

At the invitation of Yan Min, MD, the department chair, UCLA’s presentations at the one-day conference included:

• Aman Mahajan, MD, PhD, department chair, on "Building a future for anesthesiology and perioperative medicine"

• Randolph Steadman, MD, on "Using simulation for training and performance improvement: Perspective from the USA"

• Daniel Cole, MD, on "Innovation in healthcare delivery in anesthesiology: The Perioperative Surgical Home"

• Thomas Vondriska, PhD, on "Epigenomics of cardiovascular disease: from chromatin fiber to human populations"

• Victor Xia, MD, on "Preoperative optimization: a multimodal approach to improve outcomes in surgical patients"

The Conference was well attended by health care professionals within SAHZU as well as from other local hospitals. Remarkably, there is a free app for smartphones and computers that broadcasts educational conferences online in real time. More than 800 outside viewers logged in to take advantage of this unique educational opportunity.

In addition to the joint conference, UCLA faculty members engaged in other talks and activities. Dr. Cole gave a hospital-wide grand rounds for SAHZU faculty and staff beyond the anesthesiology department, and Dr. Steadman attended a simulation session on perioperative crisis management. The group met with two of the hospital's vice presidents, toured SAHZU facilities including operating rooms and research laboratories, and discussed opportunities for future collaboration:

• Expand resident and fellow training and exchange programs

• Explore the possibility of a joint TEE/TTE/Echo conference and workshop

• Telemedicine sharing of Grand Rounds and resident lectures

• Joint training in perioperative management

• Creation of a new perioperative database at SAHZU

• Establish a biobank of blood and tissue specimens for precision health research

• Partnership in simulation training

• Joint faculty appointments

UCLA Health has a long history of collaboration with SAHZU. Many of the UCLA faculty members have visited or studied at SAHZU which has become an international training site for UCLA residents since 2012.
