The Center consists of the departments of Surgical Oncology (regarding tumors in colon, breast, liver, gallbladder, pancreas, bone, brain, thyroid etc.), Medical Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Interventional Oncology, and the Cancer Institute. It is a nationally renowned key medical discipline and homes a state key laboratory recognized by the Ministry of Education. It is often regarded as the pioneer to lay the foundation of colorectal research in China.

The Center is able to diagnose and treat a variety of tumors and especially skilled at minimally invasive and robotic surgeries, enhanced recovery after tumor surgeries, multidisciplinary treatment, precise medicine, and care for tumor patients. It is equipped with a world leading Day Chemotherapy unit that could greatly improve the survival rate and life quality of tumor patients.

The Center has a unique mode of clinician-scientist collaboration that has yielded fruitful results from its translational research. For 43 years, the Center has been devoted to the screening and prevention of colorectal cancer  and has developed a standard solution to the early diagnosis and treatment of colorectal cancer. Significant reduction in the incidence and mortality of colorectal cancer has been observed in the following years. The Center also pioneered a variety of advanced therapies. Its team developed a procedure, TILA-TACE (targeting-intratumoral-lactic-acidosis transarterial chemoembolization), with a remarkably higher efficacy in treating primary hepatocellular carcinoma. The team is also specialized at multidisciplinary treatment for advanced tumor combined with radical organ resection.

The Center authored or co-authored 32 national-level guidelines and expert consensus on cancer diagnosis and treatment. It is the principal investigator of or be responsible for over 150 major research projects at home and abroad. The Center has won the National Science and Technology Progress Award three times, and hundreds of its researches have been funded by the NSFC (Natural Science Foundation of China) in past years.
