The Department of Emergency Medicine at SAHZU was established in 1984, one of the earliest in China. It is a National Clinical Key Subject, Key Medical Subject of Zhejiang Province, and the first to offer air medical service in eastern China. It also homes the Institute of Emergency Medicine Zhejiang University, Quality Control Center of Emergency Medicine Zhejiang Province. The Department ranks the 5th in China in 2018.

The Department provides its services at both campus, Jiefang Campus and Binjiang Campus, with an annual visits of over 360,000. The Department has totally 125 beds, including 33 beds in the resuscitation area, 16 beds in emergency ICU, 61 beds in emergency ward, and 15 observation beds. 56 doctors and over 60 residents are currently working in the Department of Emergency Medicine at SAHZU.

The Department is also the place where the Chinese Association of Emergency Medicine (CAEM) was founded in 1987. The Association runs its official magazine, Chinese Journal of Emergency Medicine, and an international journal, World Journal of Emergency Medicine, which was indexed by SCI with an impact factor of 1.437. Professor Jiang Guanyu, the former president of SAHZU and Emergency Medicine, is one of the pioneers of emergency medicine in China and a former president of CAEM.
