Our department engages in both basic and clinical reproductive research. The faculty providing the internationalized therapeutic philosophy and the sinified exquisite. The Department of Respiratory Medicine has been founded for about 50 years. Since then the department has set the standard of excellence in the clinical care and basic research of pulmonary diseases, including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pulmonary infection diseases, respiratory failure, lung cancer and other rare, severe and refractory lung diseases. It became one of the first drug clinical trial institutions for respiratory diseases approved by the State Food and Drug Administration in 1983, and was one of the training centers for pulmonary clinicians certified by the Ministry of Public Health. In 2003, the department played the leading role in setting up the Institute of Respiratory Medicine at Zhejiang University. Today, the department has become one of the National Clinical Key Specialty Construction Preparatory Projects, and one of the Key Medical Departments in Zhejiang province.
The Department comprises the Pulmonary Disease Clinic, Respiratory Disease Ward, Respiratory Intensive Care Unit (RICU), MonitorCenter for obstructive sleep Apnea and Hypopnea Syndrome (OSAHS), Pulmonary Function Testing Lab, Bronchofibroscopy Examining Lab, and Respiratory Medicine Lab. The department has more than 120 faculty members, and 80% of physicians have obtained a doctoral or master degree. The department provides inpatient and outpatient services for patients from Zhejiang Province as well as neighboring provinces.
The Department is now directed by Dr. Huahao Shen, a renowned respiratory scientist in China. He is the Vice President of Chinese Thoracic Society and the Vice Chairman of Chinese Asthma Association. He is undoubtedly one of the best clinicians in asthma treatment. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the first clinical Handbook of Asthma in China. He was awarded of “Distinguished Respiratory Physician of China” in 2009. That is the top prize for Chinese respiratory clinicians. He is a Professor of “Chang Jiang Scholars Program”, Ministry of Education of China in 2009, and has received the “Distinguished Young Investigator Award” from the National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2008. He has obtained more than 20 research grants from national, ministry, or provincial foundations durinthe g past 20 years, including the National Basic Research Program of China (973), the National High Technology Research and Development Program of China (863), and the Key Project of National Natural Science Foundation of China.
The Department has an active program of clinical research. Through research based practice and a commitment to continuing education, the department has remained in the forefront of pathogenesis and early prevention of asthma worldwide. Moreover, the department is well-known in the fields of pulmonary local immunology, pathogenesis and etiology of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis, and development of antibiotics and antiasthmatics drugs. In addition, the department is excellent at whole lung lavage, airway reactivity examination, detection of respiratory atypical pathogen infection, research in drug resistance to aeruginous Pseudomonas, diagnosis and combined therapy of OSAS, and induced sputum examination. Members of the department have rich experience in allergen detection of asthma, transbronchial lung biopsy (TBLB), bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL), protected specimen brush (PSB), airway constriction management by metal frame implantation, CT-guided or ultrasound-guided percutaneous lung biopsy, pulmonary function test, diagnosis and treatment of pulmonary infection, and bacterial drug resistance monitoring from nosocomial infection.
