The department has always maintained a tradition of research on diseases of the heart, aorta and other blood vessels. Research focus is mainly about laboratory research on cardiovascular diseases and clinical trials of treatments and devices.

Among current clinical research efforts, new techniques are used to repair heart valves to improve cardiac revascularization and performance. It has also developed a new domestic-made solid pyrolytic carbon bileaflet heart valve prosthesis in 2002.

In the research laboratory, physician-scientists are studying the molecular genetics behind angiogenesis and stenosis of graft, ischemic and reperfusion injury, and acute lung injury during surgery. Many surgeons have been awarded for distinguished achievements by local and central government in recent years.
