The Department of Medical Oncology was established in 1989 and was the earliest established department specializing in chemotherapy in Zhejiang Province. Oncology at the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine is a national key discipline, enjoying high reputation in the country. Well known oncology specialist Professor Zheng Shu and Professor Zhang Suzhan are leaders in the field of Oncology. Prof. Ying YUAN is the Chair of the Department of Medical Oncology.

In our department, patients with advanced cancer can receive individualized treatment using chemotherapy combined with targeted therapy, endocrine therapy, immunotherapy and hyperthermia as appropriate. We have rich clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, lung cancer, colorectal cancer, gastric cancer, lymphoma, bone and soft tissue tumors, malignant melanoma and pleural and peritoneal effusion.

There is a type UHR-2000 high power microwave-based whole body hyperthermia machine in our department, and we are the first to use microwave-based whole body hyperthermia in treating malignant carcinomas in Zhejiang Province. The machine overcomes decades of unresolved problems, using microwave to give patients systemic treatment, which can kill tumor cells and destroy tumor blood vessels to cut off the tumor's nutrient supply directly. Currently, our department has treated more than 200 patients with chemotherapy and radiotherapy combined with hyperthermia. Clinical experience shows that hyperthermia offers much advantage in treating malignant pleural and peritoneal effusion. Combined with hyperthermia, the local control rate of tumors using chemotherapy can be improved, and side effects reduced. Hyperthermia is safe, needs no general anesthesia, and has no obvious adverse effects.
