Research Summary

Dr. Dong's research focuses on the development and application of classification and diagnosis system for temporomandibular disorders based on oral and maxillofacial physiological signals. Her research is mainly to improve the accuracy of temporomandibular joint disorders classification diagnosis by collecting and analyzing the physiological signal characteristics such as joint noise, surface electromyography and joint movement from the maxillofacial region. With dynamic assessment of TMJ function, Dr. Dong's team is intended to provide a physiological evaluation system for temporomandibular joint disorders patients and a basis for treatment options and evaluation of treatment effects.

Dr. Dong is also engaged in bone tissue engineering and biomaterials for many years. In order to improve the efficiency and quality of new bone formation through guided bone regeneration (GBR) during implantation process, she designs and fabricates many kinds of GBR membrane using collagen and chitosan through freeze-drying and electrospinning. The nanofiber chitosan-collagen membrane manufactured by electrospinning has been proven to effectively promote new bone regeneration in GBR procedures. Although this material is still far from clinical application, it is a promising GBR material.

Thirdly, Dr. Dong is aimed to investigate the feasibility of manufacturing the framework of maxillofacial prosthesis by SLM(Selective laser melting) technique. Prosthesis framework printed by SLM technique was compared with the one made by traditional dewaxing casting technique, in sitting and fitting on the cast. She drew a conclusion that the SLM 3D-printing technique is feasible for manufacturing the framework of prosthesis.
