Stroke is the major cause of adult disability, resulting in residual impairments that diminish most stroke survivors' independence and quality of life. Motor rehabilitative training combined with brain stimulation is appealing in enhancing motor function following stroke. Dr. Zheng's team has confirmed that cortical electrical stimulation promotes neuronal plasticity in the peri-ischemic cortex and contralesional anterior horn of cervical spinal cord in a rat model of focal cerebral ischemia. Now, they are trying to optimize electrical stimulation parameters and assess the curative effect in ischemic patients.
