The Department is dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (lupus), Scleroderma (systemic sclerosis), Gout, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Sjogren's Syndrome, Polymyositis, Dermatomyositis, Spondyloarthropathies (such as Ankylosing Spondylitis, Psoriatic Arthritis and Reiter's Syndrome), Vasculitis, Rheumatic Fever, Degenerative Arthritis and various kinds of Arthropathy. Many of these are "autoimmune" disorders, in which the body's immune system attacks the patient's own joints, skin, muscles or internal organs. It is estimated that autoimmune disorders affect approximately 5% of the population.
