Founded in 1962, the Department of Ultrasound Medicine became an independent clinical department in 1990. Under the leadership of Professor Huang Pintong, the discipline has formed a sound development pattern featuring balanced diagnosis and interventional treatment as well as integrated clinical practice, teaching and research, striving to build a high-level international ultrasound medical center. Equipped with comprehensive facilities and a complete sub-specialty system, the department covers seven sub-disciplines that fully support ultrasound diagnosis and treatment for all human systems.

In 2024, the joint laboratory co-established by the department and the French National Institute of Health and Medical Research was accredited as a Zhejiang Provincial International Joint Laboratory. In the same year, Professor Huang Pintong was honored as a Fellow of the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM), becoming the first expert in Chinese mainland and the sole recipient in Asia for this honor in that year. Boasting profound international influence, the department maintains regular international academic exchanges, continuously receives physicians and students from various countries for advanced training, and attracts numerous foreign patients for specialized treatment. Having successfully hosted the Westlake International Forum on Ultrasound in Medicine for 15 consecutive years, the department has gathered experts and scholars from more than 20 countries and regions worldwide, greatly enhancing the discipline’s domestic leading position and global academic reputation.
