The department has 56 inpatient beds and 15 physicians, including 3 chief physicians, 5 associate chief physicians, 3 attending physicians. 12 of them have MD degree, 3 master degree.

The department focuses on the surgical treatment of gastric cancer (GC). More than 600 cases of gastric cancer patients are admitted in the department each year. It is actively engaged in neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy, conversion therapy, and the nutritional assessment and nutritional intervention treatment for GC. Another expertise of the department is the diagnosis and treatment of gastrointestinal stromal tumors.

The department features minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery and carries out multimodal gastric cancer treatment. In 2005, it successfully completed the first case of laparoscopic distal gastrectomy for GC in the Zhejiang province. The department is good at endoscopic fluorescence-guided gastrectomy and robotic-assisted gastrectomy. Nearly 700 cases of various types of GC operations are completed each year. The overall diagnosis and treatment capability of the department has reached the leading level domestically and internationally.

While performing clinical, teaching and training obligations, the department also attaches much importance to clinical and basic research, and translation research. It undertakes four national programs funded by the Natural Science Foundation of China, one Zhejiang Provincial Key R&D Project, one Zhejiang Provincial Major Science and Technology Special Project, and three Zhejiang Natural Science Foundation Projects.

The department has long-established collaborative programs with MD Anderson Cancer Center, UCLA, Yonsei University School of Medicine, Japan National Cancer Center, Albert University and other world-renowned medical centers. Annually, it organizes the Zhejiang University International Gastric Cancer Forum that hosts invited speakers from the United States, Japan, South Korea, etc.
